If i was to get stabbed would the police wait for the attacker outside his home?

For instance, I seen I'n tv shows police waiting for the attacker outside his home.Do police do this I'n real life.I live I'n Ny, the Bronx.Where the police do not really do their jobs.So let's say for example,someone stabbed me I know his first name,but not his last name:I know what building he lives I'n as well although not his apartment.Will the police wait outside the building until they see the attacker that stabbed me.Does it has to be a very bad wound for them to take upon this action and wait outside?
